Don’t Let Scammers Steal Your Heart (or Your Money): The Puppy Scam and How to Avoid It

Chief Financial Credit Union ...More Than Money

Today, we’re shining a light on a heartbreaking scam that’s been tugging at people’s heartstrings – and wallets.

The Adorable Trap: Understanding the Puppy Scam

Picture this: You’re scrolling through social media when you spot an ad for the most irresistible puppies you’ve ever seen. The seller is out-of-state, but those little faces are just too cute to pass up. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, this scenario is often the beginning of a costly scam.

Here’s how it typically unfolds:

  1. You reach out to the seller, usually via text or a messaging app.
  2. They tell you puppies are available – purebred and surprisingly affordable!
  3. You exchange messages, maybe even a call, and set a delivery date.
  4. You send a deposit (often around $500) to “hold” your puppy.
  5. Suddenly, there are unexpected shipping costs – sometimes thousands of dollars.
  6. Once you pay, the seller disappears, leaving you without a puppy and with a much lighter wallet.

Protecting Yourself: Our Top Tips

We believe in the power of unity and creativity in problem-solving. Here are some ways to outsmart these scammers:

  1. Stay Local: Whenever possible, adopt from nearby shelters or meet breeders in person.
  2. Research, Research, Research: Check reviews, ask for references, and verify credentials.
  3. Video Chat: Ask to see the puppy “live” via video call before sending any money.
  4. Be Wary of Unusual Payment Methods: Legitimate breeders typically don’t ask for wire transfers or gift cards.
  5. Trust Your Gut: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.
